Mooting allows Law students to develop courtroom skills in mock trials.  Mooting competitions take place locally, nationally and internationally and QUT is well represented in many competitions.  Some units offer mooting as an alternative form of assessment.

QUT Mooting Teams have long had a reputation for being strong competitors in mooting competitions. Mooting skills are essential for students wishing to be admitted to the bar at some stage in their careers. Mooting teaches students the art of courtroom procedure and debate and how theory is applied.

Two new mooting electives have been added to the Law School curriculum to ensure students get academic credit for moot participation and to provide further opportunities to develop courtroom skills.  Students may also enrol in an elective that gives them involvement in the prestigious Jessup International Law Moot.

Mooting is also available for external students.

Mooting students have the opportunity to gain skills in advanced courtroom procedures by using the new <e.law> QUT Moot Court.  This is the most advanced, integrated electronic courtroom in the Southern Hemisphere .  The facility is custom-designed for ease of use and fitted with the latest in courtroom software.

The track record of QUT mooters is impressive. Significant successes include:

  • 2002 Winners of International Environmental Moot at Stetson College of Law, Florida, USA
  • 2002 Finalists in Pan-Pacific International Mooting Competition
  • 2000 Best Orator at the Australian Law Students' Association
  • 2000 Highest Ranked Team in the general rounds of the International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot.

Moots are only available to Law School students and are not part of the School of Justice program.
