Buddy

  • School of Justice promotes QUT careers mentor scheme to all students generally and especially at orientations for first years.
  • Current Indigenous students employed to act as 'peer mentors' during 2-3 day Pre-law Program for commencing Indigenous Students (Law and Justice)
  • Informal mentoring for international students by way of morning tea early in semester to introduce new students to the current ones.
  • The Law School provides a peer mentor program for first year students to assist them in their transition to university.

Learning Support:

  • LWB141 Legal Institutions and Method (Law School) and JSB132 Professional Skills (Justices Studies) first semester first year units involve IT literacy and academic writing/research skills.
  • Structure and focus of core first year units in both School of Law and School of Justice designed to provide learning support for students, in the sense that both first year programs are developed in an integrated and incremental way with a commitment to the pedagogy of scaffolding and providing formative feedback to students on their learning to lay the necessary foundations for students' later years of study.
  • Pre-Law Program for commencing Indigenous Students (Law & Justice): 2-3 day program covering study, library & IT skills, as well as panel session with current Indigenous students.
  • Specialist Equity Orientation - 1 day workshop for commencing Q-Step students (Law School) covering study, library & IT skills, as well as panel session with current students.
  • Special 3 day orientation attendance school for Law School external students which also assists in study skills acquisition.
  • Provision general assistance and advising by administrative and academic staff to students re appropriate support facilities at QUT and on suggested combinations of units and appropriate study load.
  • Most Faculty OLT sites have links to generic skills materials.

Contact First Year

  • School of Justice has regular email contact with all first year students and contacts first year student reps twice a semester.
  • For both Schools, main first year contact is orientation - which is held in the same format for beginning of the year and mid-year entry students.
  • Law School External students have a compulsory orientation attendance school at the end of first week of semester (both semesters' entry), which provides students with information about studying as an external student, together with some grounding in study skills.
  • Email (around Week 6-7) to all first-year Indigenous and Q-Step students checking on their progress and inviting them to raise any issues of concern with Law Equity Officer.

Resources For

  • Faculty website: web-based information from the Assistant Dean, Learning and Teaching available for all students, including a link to specific information on Surviving First Year, transition issues, necessity for time management skills, links to support services and other workshop information.
  • Student handbooks made available to all students (eg, Law School Undergraduate Student Handbook for the current year and First Year Justice Studies Handbook).
  • At the tailored orientations for Q-step and Indigenous students, each student is provided with sets of resources and other information.
  • First year OLT sites provide a range of resources for first year students.

Social Events For:

  • Social events are geared around Orientation sessions - eg School of Justice has a morning tea for commencing students to meet staff and new colleagues; the Law School has a special orientation for part-time students which commences with an afternoon tea
  • Staff/Student morning tea (usually each semester) for new and continuing Indigenous and Q-Step students.
  • Lunch for new and continuing Indigenous students with Indigenous lawyers.
  • Morning tea and lunch during Equity Orientation and Pre-law Program where commencing students meet key academic and administrative staff responsible for first-year programs.
  • QUT Law and Justice Students Association (QUOTALS) holds a welcome BBQ on the Friday before semester starts for all commencing students and staff.

Contact First Year:

  • Contact with first year unit coordinators and teachers.
  • Contact with School administrative staff, particularly "front desk" staff.
  • Law School external students have dedicated administration staff contact.
