The Faculty of Law at the Queensland University of Technology offers the opportunity to complete courses in Law regardless of your location within Australia.

Students are able to study at home or work by using the Internet to access some resource materials, discussion groups (if relevant to the unit) and lecturers. (Please note, international students on student visas may only enrol in units held on campus).

Teaching Periods for 2007

In 2006, the Law School trialled the use of 6 week teaching periods (6TPs) for some of the intensive units. The use of 6TPs for intensive units allows more flexibility for students to add units closer to the commencement date of the class, and also allows for withdrawal dates to be more closely aligned to the actual class dates. We will be continuing with the use of 6TP’s for 2007 for some of the intensive units (not all intensives align well into these 6TP’s, therefore will remain as part of the Sem 1 or 2 teaching periods). Students choosing to take units that are offered in different teaching periods or semesters must familiarise themselves with the different addition and withdrawal dates* that relate specifically to each teaching period.

*Important notes relating to INTENSIVES

  • the rule relating to withdrawal without financial penalty from units offered in intensive mode, is different to that for internal/external units, regardless of the teaching period it is offered in. The rule for intensives is: if you withdraw before the first day of the actual classes, you are not liable for any tuition fees, but if you withdraw on or after the first day of actual classes, you will be financially liable for the unit (click here to be taken to further information on financial penalties dates)
  • the addition and withdrawal without academic penalty dates for intensives relate specifically to the teaching period which they are offered in (ie. Sem 1, Sem 2, 6TP2 etc) (click here to be taken to further information on these specific dates)
  • intensive units require compulsory attendance at Gardens Point campus on all days scheduled (normally 4 or 5 days). If you cannot attend all of the classes for an intensive, you should consider withdrawing from the unit.

Description of how units are taught:

Postgraduate law units are offered in either intensive; internal and/or external mode of study:

INTENSIVE - Students attend classes on Gardens Point Campus, usually held over 4 to 5 consecutive days or over 2 weekends. Major assessment is due not normally less than 8 weeks after the completion of classes. Attendance at all classes is compulsory.

INTERNAL - Students usually attend a 2 hr lecture/tutorial once a week for the 13 week teaching period. Lectures are normally held from 6.00pm-8.00pm* on any evening Monday to Thursday. Major assessment is due at the end of the teaching period. Attendance is compulsory. *class times may vary for some units.

EXTERNAL - Students do not need to attend campus. Internal lectures are recorded and an audio-stream is available on OLT sites, or CD's are posted out. Major assessment is due at the end of the teaching period.

Please note that the information below is subject to change & changes will be posted below and kept as up-to-date as possible.
