Law graduates who are completing 'Supervised Workplace Experience' programs (formerly 'articles of clerkship') in law firms are required to complete 90 hours of 'approved training' as a prerequisite for admission as a legal practioner of the Supreme Court of Queensland (see rule 9 of the Supreme Court (Admission) Rules 2004). QUT is approved to provide you with that training.

Further Information

Trainees undertaking 'Supervised Workplace Experience' training (articles) are required to complete the following training during their workplace experience:

  • Workplace training in specified practice areas, complying with the legislated list of competencies. If the firm is unable to offer training in all specified areas, the trainee must complete 'supplementary training' with an approved provider; and
  • All trainees must complete 90 hours of 'approved training' (that includes training in Ethics).

QUT has been approved by the Legal Practitioners Admissions Board to provide both 'approved training' and supplementary training'. Our training is provided on-line with 6 commencement dates per year. While 'Criminal law' has a one day attendance component, all the other units can be completed wholly on-line. Trainees complete each unit within a 6 month period from the commencement date, and are provided with a suggested timetable to assist with time management.

For commencement dates and fee information refer to the registration form.

Your choice of Units

For the 90 hour Trainee Solicitor Program (TSP), trainees will complete a compulsory Ethics component and in addition they may choose one 12 credit point unit from list A or two 6 credit point units from list B:

List A (12 credit point units)

  • Litigation
  • Property
  • Commercial

List B (6 credit point units)

  • Administrative law
  • Family law
  • Consumer law
  • Employment and Industrial law
  • Planning and Environment law
  • Wills and Estates
  • Criminal Law

Trainees who are undertaking 'supplementary training' may also choose from the units listed above, in order to meet the list of workplace competencies required under the admissions legislation.

Trainees will benefit from personal, responsive delivery of the course content from QUT’s professional, approachable and supportive staff.

For background information about the legislative training scheme, you may be interested in an article published in the October 2005 Proctor (page 15) which was written by Allan Chay (Director, Legal Practice Unit) and Melissa Timmins (Secretary, Legal Practitioners Admissions Board) entitled Supervised workplace experience replaces articles of clerkship.
