Ian came to QUT at the beginning of 2000 from the Criminal Justice Commission where he held the position of Principal Intelligence Analyst. Prior to this he held a wide range of intelligence and government policy appointments, including Coordinator Intelligence Analysis and Manager Asia Branch within the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation. As Coordinator Intelligence Analysis Ian was heavily involved in security planning for the Sydney Olympics and Australia 's counter terrorism response.

Ian also served two terms as South Asia analyst with the Office of National Assessments. The Office of National Assessment provides assessments on political, strategic and economic developments in the world to the Prime Minister. During these periods he reported extensively on political and strategic developments in South Asia and participated in the Office's role in the lead up to the Gulf War. Ian also served as a policy officer in the Commonwealth Department of Defence working in the department's international relations and capability development areas and heading up the area responsible for developing peacekeeping policy.
