Before joining the Faculty of Law Iyla was a solicitor with M.G. Lyons and Co.  She practised in the areas of family law and personal injuries. She became a Senior Lecturer in 1992 and has taught in Family Law, Law of Contract, Equity Law for Surveyors, Criminal Law, Alternative Dispute Resolution/Mediation, Law in Context and Law and Global Perspectives.

Iyla currently teaches family law and alternative dispute resolution at undergraduate level and alternative dispute resolution/mediation at a masters level. She has published extensively in these areas. Iyla has completed Australian and overseas training courses (including Harvard Law School) in negotiation and mediation and has conducted over 80 mediation training courses for government and private organisations.

Iyla serves on a number of community engagement committees. She is currently Queensland President of Relationships Australia (formerly Marriage Guidance), Member of the Legal Aid Board Queensland and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
