The <e.law> QUT Moot Court is one of Australia's most advanced electronic courtrooms containing state-of-the-art information technology and audio-visual integration. New technology in the courtroom revolutionises document management and provide new methods of displaying evidence and exhibits. Efficiencies are created through faster access to and display of information.

view of juryThe <e.law> QUT Moot Court is one of the leading electronic moot court rooms in the world. The <e.law> QUT Moot Court is used to educate students in the applications of new technologies to the courtroom and the legal profession overall.

view from press galleryQUT Law graduates will have a thorough understanding of the application of law office technology and the ways in which lawyers can use workflow, communications, multimedia and computerised legal research to improve their efficiency. The <e.law> QUT Moot Court, on-line teaching sites, electronic library databases and 24 hour computer laboratories have been progressively installed to achieve this.

view from behind juryThe <e.law> QUT Moot Court enables students to be trained in advocacy and mooting. Graduating students enter the profession with relevant, current skills in electronic courtroom procedure. Members of the profession may also benefit from the <e.law> QUT Moot Court through Continuing Legal Education training.

view from witness standCurrent facilities include Ringtail Courtbook software, 14 multimedia computers with Internet and Library database access, document projector, video and audio recording capabilities including optional quad screen display and data projection facilities. Real Time transcript software will be installed and videoconferencing facilities are included in the upgrade plan. All equipment in the facility is controlled by a touch screen, which includes the ability to send information to any of the 25 LCD screens.

The <e.law> QUT Moot Court offers these benefits to the court process:

  • A speedier tracking system for case management
  • Documents, once scanned, numbered and indexed, will not need to be photocopied a number of times, cutting down the volume and cost of paper.
  • While originals will still need to be kept, electronic copies will be sufficient in most cases in the courtroom.
  • Searching through documents and transcript will be much faster, reducing the time spent in court and court costs.
  • The Opportunity to use contemporary electronic transcription methods is a particular advantage for counsel and judges.
  • Floppy disks and electronic transfer of documents to courtroom files will replace trolleys laden with paper.
  • The software used is web-base allowing practitioners to have password access to court documents and be able to work on them at any location.

QUT leads in e-court technology, education and research

Since the e-court opened in July 2001, the technology showcased in the court has remained at the forefront of case and court electronic management. It uses the latest software and hardware and is constantly being upgraded in line with the latest developments in this specialised area.

Education
The electronic courtroom is used by undergraduate and postgraduate legal practice and bar practice students for training in advocacy. Additionally students are tutored in the use of the integrated case management and court management software and hardware. Students from around Australia and new Zealand competing in the competition moots held at the QUT School of Law are also able to take advantage of the electronic facilities.

Research
School of Law academics, whose interests lie in this developing area of modern legal practice, are undertaking research into various aspects of electronic court practice and the teaching and learning benefits the electronic facilities bring to advocacy training.

QUT Law staff used the <e.law> QUT Moot Court in an electronic moot , the Virtual Moot, in 2006 and 2007 which involved teams from around Australia and the United States.

QUT intends to compete in this competitition again in 2008.

Training Sessions

Training in the electronic courtroom procedure is available to judges, barristers, litigation lawyers, paralegals and court managers. Training sessions can be created to suit the needs of your firm, chamber or court.
