International Virtual Moot |
In 2006, the Law School participated in an international virtual moot with three other law schools in Australia - University of Melbourne, Murdoch University and the University of Canberra - and the Marshall-Wythe School of Law and Courtroom 21 at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg Virginia. The problem involved a dispute over an internet domain name, and was argued as if the dispute was being decided by web conference by an Administrative Panel under the ICANN Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP). Each of the law schools used the facilities of their electronic moot courts.. Each round of the moot saw teams from two of the law schools arguing the case for one side from their own moot court, with the judging panel sitting in one of the other moot courts. So everyone saw a screen with four quadrants, with a logo, two teams and the judges, like this:
This was the 4th round - the judges are at Murdoch University, the speaker is at QUT and the other team at the table is at the University of Melbourne. The judges awarded the competition, by a narrow margin, to the Univeristy of Melbourne. In 2007, the QUT Law School again competed in the Virtual Moot. The problem involved Second Life and an avatar causing problems at an AGM. QUT won one round and lost the other. The competition was eventually won by the team from the College of William & Mary. In 2008, the Virtual Moot will be run by Murdoch University.
