What is Equity?

The Faculty of Law is committed to the principles of social justice, equality of opportunity and cultural diversity, and we seek to implement these in the conduct of our activities and relationships.

Equity means fairness and a fair go for all.  As a staff member or student you should be able to enjoy a safe and non discriminatory environment and have the same opportunities to benefit from employment and education as other people.

Treating people equitably does not mean everyone is treated in the same way.  Rather it means that staff and students are treated in a fair and flexible way because people have different needs.  As well, some people belong to groups that have experienced disadvantage which has impeded their progress in education or employment.

What do we do?

We provide advice and support to staff and students on equity matters, including issues relating to: discrimination and harassment issues; cultural diversity; disability;  and reconciliation.

We provide financial support to students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds and are committed to increasing the enrolment of low-income students within the Faculty.

We promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.  The Faculty has implemented a number of strategies to improve the access, retention, participation and success of Indigenous students and staff.

We are committed to improving the representation of women staff members, particularly in senior academic and management roles.

The QUT Equity Section has further information on the university's commitment to social justice and equity.
